Asim Abbasi

Asim Abbasi is an independent filmmaker based out of Pakistan and the UK. Asim’s most recent project, Churails, a ten-part webseries, that he created, wrote and directed, was released through ZEE5 in 2020. Asim’s debut feature film as writer/director Cake, opened theatrically in 2018 to critical acclaim. It was the first Urdu/Pakistani film to have its world premiere at West End, Leicester Square and won Asim the ‘Best Director’ award at the UK Asian Film Festival. Cake also won the awards for Best Film at Tasveer South Asian Film Festival and South Asian Film Festival of Montreal. Cake was Pakistan’s official entry for Foreign Language Oscars 2019. Prior to Cake, Asim has written, produced, and directed short films that have played at various festivals around the world. Asim has a BSc (Hons) in Economics from the London School of Economics and a MA in Global Cinemas from School of Oriental & African Studies. Asim has also studied at the London Film Academy and worked in finance for several years, prior to his filmmaking career.
