Gregory Maxwell Bruce

Gregory Maxwell Bruce is a Lecturer in Urdu at the Department of South & Southeast Asian Studies, University of California, Berkeley. He is the editor and translator of Turkey, Egypt, and Syria: A Travelogue by Shibli Nu’mani (2019); author of Urdu Vocabulary: A Workbook for Intermediate and Advanced Students (2021); and a regular contributor to Brill’s online Encyclopaedia of Islam (Third edition), and Encyclopaedia Iranica. He has previously taught Urdu courses at University of Texas, Austin in 2008-2016 and at the South Asia Summer Language Institute, University of Wisconsin- Madison in 2009. He writes ghazal poetry in Urdu and Persian, and has performed at mushairas and other literary events in the United States and India.
